Farming the Golden Green

Malunggay
(Moringa Oleifera)

Production Guide

Moringa is one of the world’s most nutritious plants with various uses in agriculture, medicine and industry.  It is locally called as Marunnggay by Ilokanos, Kalamunge (Pampango), Kalamongan and Malunggay (Bisaya), and Kalunggay (Bicolano).

M.oleifera and M. stenopetala are the most commonly grown species of Moringa. M.oleifera is widely cultivated and is the subject of this guide.

Adaptability

Malunggay tolerates a wide range of environmental conditions.  It grows best between 25 to 35oC, but will tolerate up to 48oC in the shade.  Altitudes below 600 meters are best for malunggay, but this can grow in altitudes up to 1200 m in the tropics.  The tree prefers a well-drained sandy loam or loam soil, but tolerates clay.

It will not survive under prolonged flooding and poor drainage. The plant tolerates a soil pH of 5.0-9.0.
