BIONet
Center of Tarlac established
THE
Philippines, being an agricultural country, has the potential of
maximizing its production and income through biotechnology. To
systematically disseminate information on Biotechnology among the
Filipino farmers, the Biotechnology Information and Organization Network
(BIONet) Center of
Tarlac
was established by the Department of Agriculture through the
Biotechnology Program Office.
The aim of BIONet
Center
is to uplift the economic status of farmers by introducing them to
BIOCommerce, an industry in which agricultural products are processed
into consumer products through biotechnology.
Tarlac is an ideal place to establish the groundwork on BIOCommerce. The
province’s agricultural sector is well supported by its governor, Victor
Yap, who aims to fully develop Tarlac as the Agricultural Capital of the
Philippines.
The
Office of the Provincial Agriculturist will manage the BIONet Center of
Tarlac. Tarlac Provincial Agriculturist, Edwina Tabamo, who also is the
Secretary of the BIONet Council, will supervise it. The establishment of
the center in Tarlac aims to develop a more focused program that
maximizes the benefits of Tarlac from the BIOCommerce industry.
